My partner and I are planning to move from New York to California this summer for new job opportunities. We are trying to keep costs down as much as possible since we don't have a huge savings cushion. We've already looked into renting a U-Haul, but the one-way rental fees are honestly shocking. Does anyone have experience with shipping pods or using freight services for a long-distance move? Any advice on how to downsize effectively or where to find affordable packing supplies would also be greatly appreciated.

Moving cross-country is brutal on the wallet. Definitely sell as much furniture as you can before you go; it costs way more to ship it than to just buy new stuff on Craigslist when you arrive.

I second the downsizing advice. We moved from Boston to Seattle and ended up paying to ship a dresser that cost less than the shipping fee. Total regret.

Check out U-Pack. They drop off a trailer, you load it, and they drive it. It's usually cheaper than the rental trucks once you factor in gas and hotels.

For packing supplies, skip the hardware store. Go to your local liquor stores or grocery stores and ask for their leftover boxes. They are usually happy to get rid of them.

That liquor store tip is gold! Just make sure you get boxes that are sturdy so they don't collapse in the moving truck.

Have you considered selling your car and just buying something else in CA? Sometimes the cost of shipping a vehicle is insane.

Honestly, if you don't have a lot of stuff, just ship it via Amtrak. It’s surprisingly cheap if you can fit everything into a few large trunks.

Amtrak shipping is a great hack! I used it for my move to LA and saved hundreds compared to a PODS container.

Make sure to check if your new employer offers a relocation stipend. Even if it's not a lot, every bit helps cover the gas.

Moving in the summer is peak season, so expect those U-Haul prices to be at their absolute highest. If you have any flexibility with your start date, try to push it to late September.

I used a PODS container last year. It’s convenient, but definitely not the cheapest option. If money is tight, stick to the U-Pack trailer method.

Don't forget to factor in the cost of food and hotels along the way. That adds up faster than the moving truck itself!

Great advice above. Also, use your clothes as padding for fragile items. You won't need to buy bubble wrap or packing peanuts that way.

Try posting on Facebook Marketplace or Nextdoor. People are always giving away moving boxes for free after they've finished unpacking.

Make sure you label everything clearly. It makes the unpacking process so much less stressful when you're exhausted from the drive.

Whatever you do, don't pay for professional movers unless your company is paying for it. It's a huge expense that is rarely worth it for a cross-country move.

Good luck with the move! California is beautiful, but yeah, the cost of living shock is real, so saving money now is a smart move.
