Is it actually possible to negotiate the standard 6% realtor commission?

I am getting ready to list my home next month and the agent I spoke with insisted that the 6% commission fee is non-negotiable. I have heard from friends that everything in real estate is up for discussion, but I am worried about appearing difficult or getting less attention for my property if I push back. Has anyone successfully negotiated a lower rate recently, or is this really a fixed industry standard? I would love to hear how you approached the conversation with your agent without ruining the professional relationship.

Everything in real estate is negotiable, period. Don't let them tell you otherwise. If they refuse to budge, find another agent who is willing to work for a fair rate.

I managed to get my agent down to 5% last year. It wasn't easy, but I just told them I had two other agents willing to list for less. Competition works wonders.

Honestly, 6% is becoming pretty outdated in many markets. Look for flat-fee brokerages if you want to save even more money.

I agree with the previous comment about flat-fee brokers, but be careful. You often get what you pay for in terms of marketing and open houses.

Just be direct. Tell them you like their track record but the commission is the only thing holding you back. If they want the listing, they will find a way to make it work.

Some agents will offer a lower commission but then cut back on professional photography or staging. Make sure you clarify exactly what's included before you sign anything.

My agent told me the same thing, that it was 'industry standard.' I told them I'd walk, and suddenly they found a way to offer a 'discount' to 4.5%.

Is it actually possible? Yes. Is it easy? Not always. Some agents are very stubborn, especially in hot markets where they know they'll sell the house regardless.

Don't feel bad about pushing back. This is a business transaction, not a friendship. They are essentially asking for a significant portion of your equity.

I'd suggest interviewing at least three different agents. You'll quickly see which ones are flexible and which ones are just reading from a script.
