How do you decide when to DIY vs calling a pro?

I've been watching a lot of home improvement tutorials lately and I'm feeling pretty confident about tackling some projects around the house. However, I'm worried about getting in over my head with plumbing or electrical work where a mistake could be really costly or dangerous. Where do you all draw the line between a fun weekend project and something that definitely requires a licensed contractor? I'd love to hear how you weigh the cost savings against the risk of needing a professional to come in and fix my mess later.

My rule is simple: if it involves water, gas, or high-voltage electricity, I call a pro. Everything else like painting, trim, or assembling furniture is fair game for a DIY weekend.

I second that. I once tried to 'fix' a leaky pipe and ended up flooding my kitchen. The money I 'saved' was immediately spent on an emergency plumber at 2 AM.

For me, it comes down to tools. If I have to buy an expensive tool I'll only use once, it's usually cheaper and safer to just pay someone who already owns it and knows how to use it.

Exactly! Plus, you have to consider the resale value. If you do your own electrical work and it's not up to code, it becomes a nightmare during a home inspection later.

I usually look at the complexity. If there is a YouTube video, I'll watch it three times. If I still feel like I'm missing something, I know it's time to hire a professional.

That's a good approach, but don't forget that some 'easy' DIY videos skip over the really hard parts. They make it look way simpler than it actually is.

I think it's about your comfort level. I'm a perfectionist, so I'd rather spend twice as long doing a job perfectly myself than pay someone who might rush through it.

I'm the opposite! My time is worth money. If a project is going to take me all weekend and leave me exhausted, I'd rather pay a contractor to get it done in three hours.

Always get three quotes. Sometimes the 'pro' price is shockingly low, and it makes the decision to skip DIY a total no-brainer.

This is great advice. I've found that sometimes professionals are actually cheaper than the cost of materials if you don't know where to source them properly.
